Getting Started
Install Software
1. Insert the Installation CD into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
2. The disc supports Windows Autoplay mode and starts running automatically. If not, click
Start
Run. In the Open box, type d:\ctrun\ctrun.exe (replace d:\ with the drive letter
of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive), and then click the OK button.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Creative MediaSource™ and Windows 98 SE drivers (only if applicable) will be installed on
your computer.
4. When prompted, restart your computer.

Charge the Battery
1. Insert the supplied battery into your player.
2. Connect your player to a power outlet using the supplied power adapter.

To charge the battery via the USB port, follow these steps:
1. Connect your player to your computer's USB port using the supplied USB cable.
2. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Removable Disk icon and click Eject to start
charging the battery. appears on your player's LCD.
3. When appears on your player's LCD, your player is fully charged.
4. Safely disconnect your player from your computer (see “Disconnecting your player
properly” on page 7).
If you have transferred or deleted files prior to charging your player's battery, you
must disconnect your player properly (see “Disconnecting your player properly” on
page 7) and then charge your player's battery by following steps 2 to 4 below.
Ignore these steps if your are charging the player's battery via the supplied power adapte
r.
You can disconnect your player from your computer even if the battery is not fully
charged.
During USB charging, your player will not respond to any file transfer commands until you
disconnect and then reconnect the player.
Before starting any extensive file transfer activity, be sure that your player is powered via
the power adapter.

Transfer Songs
1. Connect your player to your computers USB port using the supplied USB cable.
2. Launch Windows Explorer on your computer. Your player is recognized as a Removable
Disk in Windows Explorer.
3. Transfer MP3, WAV or WMA files to your player using a drag-and-drop operation.
4. After the transfer is complete, make sure you stop your player before disconnecting it from
your computer. See “Disconnecting your player properly” on page 7.

Creative MediaSource
For more advanced song management tasks, such as creating and managing playlists, you can use
Creative MediaSource Organizer. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer is your digital music
center for playing, creating, organizing and transferring digital music. To launch Creative
MediaSource Player/Organizer, double-click the Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer
icon on your desktop

Play Songs
1. Press and hold until your player turns on.
2. Press to start playing the songs that you transferred to your player.
3. Press to increase or to decrease the volume.
4. After you have finished using your player, press and hold until your player turns off.
Warning! To prevent data loss, your player must be
disconnected in a proper manner. See “Disconnecting
your player properly” on page 7.
Step 4
You can play all music from the player's root folder.
1. Press MENU.
2. Press to browse to the Folder (Root) option, and press .
If you cannot locate the Folder (Root) option in the main menu:

Usage Precautions
Disconnecting your player properly
Before disconnecting your player from your computer, use the Windows Eject or Safely
Remove Hardware icon on the Taskbar to safely disconnect your player. If not, your player
may not be able to function normally. Follow these steps below to safely disconnect your player:
Windows 98 SE
1. Wait at least 10 seconds after all file transfers
are completed.
2. In Windows Explorer, right-click the
Removable Disk icon and click Eject.
3. Unplug your player after 10 seconds.
Windows 2000, Windows Me and
Windows XP
1. Left-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Taskbar and click Safely
remove USB Mass Storage Device as shown.
2. Unplug your player when you are prompted to do so.
This prompt appears on the Taskbar in Windows XP. On other operating systems, a message
box appears on the desktop instead.

What to do if your player was disconnected improperly
If your player was disconnected improperly, one of two possible error messages may appear on
your player's screen:
In this case, to recover files on your player, do the following:
1. Reconnect your player to your computer
2. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Removable Disk icon and select the Properties
option.
3. Click the Tools tab, and then click the Check Now button. A dialog box appears.
4. Be sure that the Automatically fix file system errors option is selected. All other
options should not be selected.
5. Click the Start button.
When error checking is complete, safely unplug your player from your computer. See
“Disconnecting your player properly” on page 7.
Scenario A
In Windows XP, you will see an icon with the name of your player, instead of a Removable
Disk icon.

In this case, to recover files on your player, do the following:
1. Press MENU.
The following screen appears on your player:

5. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Removable Disk icon and select the Properties
option.

8. Click the Start button.
9. When error checking is complete, safely unplug your player from your computer. See

Scenario B
In Windows XP, you will see an icon with the name of your player, instead of a
Removable Disk icon.
If you continue to experience problems with your player, you may need to select the
Format all option to clean your player's storage memory. Doing so will erase all the files
on your player.

What to do if your player stops functioning normally
Your player may stop functioning normally if any or all of the following occurs:
Your computer stops responding during file transfers.
There is a power outage during file transfers.
Your player was unplugged, or files were being deleted during file transfers.
When this happens, you can try to recover your player using the unique Recovery Mode:
1. Press and hold until your player turns off. If you are unable to turn off your player,
proceed to the next step.
2. Disconnect all cables from your player and remove the player's battery.
3. Re-insert the battery and turn your player on to see if it starts functioning normally. If it
does not, remove the battery again and proceed to the next step.
4. Press and hold MENU. While holding down MENU, re-insert the battery, or connect your
player to a power outlet using the supplied power adapter.
5. Release MENU when the Recovery Mode screen appears as shown. If the Recovery
Mode message does not appear, repeat steps 2 and 3.
6. Press and to browse and select the recovery actions.
